Stockley Park Donates to Hillingdon Hospital’s Stroke Unit

Stockley Park’s relationship with Hillingdon Hospital was further strengthened this Spring when the hospital’s charity reached out with a request for support for the Stroke Unit’s gym.

The department’s gym provides essential therapy opportunities to help stroke patients regain physical strength and motor skills, as well as a chance for a change in scenery from the ward beds. Unfortunately, the gym was lacking much-needed equipment to assist the carers with their work. Lewis at Hillingdon Hospital’s Charity kindly reached out and introduced a specialist neurorehabilitation physiotherapist, Debbie Nielsen, to Claire Watson, Stockley Park’s Lifestyle Manager. Whilst Stockley Park was unable to help with larger items, there were over 40 pieces of equipment that could be purchased and delivered to the team.

The equipment allows patients to not only develop movement and strength in affected areas, but also allows them to learn how to be independent again. Adapted cutlery and button hook zipper were part of the shopping list to assist patients with everyday tasks, while therapy aids like a plastic arc with hoops and a gliding post, enhance fine motor skills and arm mobility.

On 6th August, Claire was warmly welcomed to the gym by Debbie and her colleagues for a tour. The visit provided Claire with a first-hand look at how the new equipment is used and the significant impact it has on patient recovery.

“Hillingdon Hospital is such a special place with staff who are caring and strive for the best for their patients. Stockley Park Estates Company Ltd is thankful to be able to assist the community where we can. Being introduced to the team at The Stroke Unit and to learn what little equipment they had to work with for therapy sessions was upsetting. I am delighted the equipment we donated is already in use to the benefit of the patients and hope we can help again in the future.”

Debbie Nielsen said the donation meant a lot to staff and patients:

“We are so grateful for your generous donation towards our therapy equipment. We managed to get many helpful things towards helping our patients recover. Equipment included many small pieces of equipment used for arm recovery, specialist equipment to help re-train a patient’s swallow, a mirror therapy box, and an electrical muscle stimulator as well as several adaptive aids to help patients independence with eating and drinking and a storage unit it keep them all nicely in. We are using them all frequently and the patients are greatly benefiting. Thank you again for choosing to support us”.
